Problem
Birds are roosting or nesting in wall voids, under eaves, and in other areas around the home.

Analysis
Most birds are harmless and pleasant, but a few species, especially pigeons, starlings, and sparrows, may become a nuisance around the home. These birds are adapted to urban and suburban environments. They roost and build nests on chimneys, ledges, rafters, eaves, drainpipes, and similar locations, and often return to the same nesting site year after year. In addition to their messy droppings and irritating chirping, birds may transmit to humans such diseases as pigeon ornithosis, aspergillosis, encephalitis, and histoplasmosis.

Solution
Where possible, exclude birds by installing screens. Apply a bird repellent adhesive or jelly to roosting and nesting areas. Clean up possible food or nest-building materials (such as dried weeds or vegetation) to discourage bird activity in the vicinity. Place flashings of hard slippery plastic or metal at a 45-degree angle on nesting or roosting areas. Hang protective netting from roof eaves. Birds may also be trapped or poisoned. If you are considering poison, contact a licensed pest control operator or your county agricultural commissioner's office for regulations pertaining to your area.
